Meanwhile, the fuel economies of different models can also be very different even when in the same vehicle class. A key factor in how far a vehicle can drive while consuming much less fuel is its battery only range, which often varies a lot within a vehicle class, as shown in Figure 1. It is important to remember these are average values across models within vehicle classes. Footnote3 For short trips (50 km or less), fuel efficiencies are much better than longer trips (200 km or greater) for all plug-in hybrids. After they drain their batteries, they drive combined city and highway driving as regular hybrids, using their ICEs and electricity stored in their batteries during regenerative braking for the rest of their trips. At distances of 200 km driven, plug-in hybrids have fuel efficiencies much lower than electric vehicles and close to those of hybrid vehicles.įigure 2 below shows estimated, average fuel efficiencies for plug-in hybrids in litres equivalent per 100 km (Le/km), assuming vehicles drive combined city and highway driving Footnote2 as battery only until they drain their batteries. At distances of 50 km driven, plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles have much higher fuel efficiencies than hybrid vehicles. Plug-In-Hybrid Efficiency Varies with Distanceĭescription: This graphic compares the fuel efficiencies of electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. If the plug-in hybrid needs to use its ICE a lot (for example, because it typically drives trips much longer than its battery only range) its fuel efficiency worsens. This means the fuel efficiency of plug-in hybrids can change quite a bit: if a plug-in hybrid can drive only on battery power most of the time, it can have very good fuel efficiency. However, the battery only ranges of plug-in hybrids are much shorter than the ranges of electric vehicles. This also means plug-in hybrids can have much better fuel economy than conventional vehicles and regular hybrids. This is because electric motors are far more energy efficient than ICEs. Some plug-in hybrids can drive for almost 100 kilometres (km) using their electric motors before their ICEs need to turn on.Ī prior snapshot showed how electric vehicles have much better fuel economy than vehicles with internal-combustion engines (conventional vehicles) and even regular hybrids. The difference between plug-in hybrids and regular hybrids is that the batteries in plug-in hybrids are much larger and can also be charged by plugging the vehicle into electrical outlets, similar to electric vehicles. Both plug-in hybrids and regular hybrids recharge their batteries while the car is driving, using regenerative braking Footnote1 and power generated by the ICE. Plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (plug-in hybrids) are like regular hybrid-electric vehicles (regular hybrids): they have an internal-combustion engine (ICE) and one or more electric motors powered by a battery. We will be keeping an eye on these bills and will provide updates on any developments as they come. Similar anti-accumulator bills are still pending in various states across the country. Connecticut’s bill applies to all health insurance policies issued, renewed, amended or continued on or after January 1, 2022. The bill’s requirement applies to all covered benefits, and does not distinguish between drugs with or without generics or biosimilars. This is when you pay a fixed amount for a covered health care service, with your insurance company covering the full service after youve paid (or reached) your. The law becomes effective on July 1, 2021.Ĭonnecticut’s bill, signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont on June 2, provides that a payer or pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) must give credit for any discount provided or payment made by a third party for the amount of, or any portion of, the out-of-pocket expense for the covered benefit. This requirement will not apply if the prescription drug has a generic equivalent, unless the patient has exhausted certain utilization management requirements, such as prior authorization or step therapy protocols. Tennessee’s bill, signed into law by Governor Bill Lee on May 12, requires insurers calculating the enrollee’s cost-sharing contribution to include cost sharing amounts paid on behalf of the enrollee for all health care items or services, including prescription drugs. An accumulator is a running total of money you’ve paid towards your out-of-pocket max for covered services. In response, manufacturers and patient advocates have pursued state and federal legislative strategies to prohibit or significantly weaken this practice, arguing that these programs result in patients paying higher out-of-pocket costs for specialty medications. Insurers have in turn implemented “accumulator adjustment programs” that seek to reverse the impact of these programs by not counting the amounts provided by the manufacturer in calculating the patient’s annual out-of-pocket limit. As my colleague Erik explained earlier this month, manufacturers often provide cost sharing assistance programs to help patients afford certain high-cost specialty drugs. In just the last few weeks, Tennessee and Connecticut joined the growing list of states to pass legislation banning the use of accumulator adjustment programs. The largest part of Canada runs on GMT-4 in the East and in GMT-5 in Central, while the Mountain area runs on GMT-6, the Pacific on GMT-7 and the Atlantic on GMT-8. NewfoundlandĪ province of Canada, Newfoundland does not follow the Canadian time zone system. The weather station in Danmarkshavn, with a population of eight people, runs on GMT. On the other hand, Thule Air Base, run by the United States Air Force in the northwest part of Greenland, runs on GMT-4. Ittoqqortoormiit, a town on the eastern coast, has its clock set two hours earlier instead (GMT-1). Greenland has three different time zones, as most of the country is three hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. If it were independent, Greenland would be the world’s 12th largest country in terms of size. Xinjiang, a region in the most western part of the country, uses a different local time known as Xinjiang Time, which is two hours behind CST. However, a part of China uses an unofficial time zone. With the official national standard time being Beijing Time (BJT) or China Standard Time (CST), daylight saving time has not been part of the picture since 1991. In fact, the country has only one time zone, even if its territory spreads into almost five geographical time zones. It would be logical to think that multiple time zones existed in China, however, it would be wrong. Time zon es in ChinaĬhina is the third-largest country in the world, with almost 1.5 bln people living in it. Since 2007, the standard time zones are categorised in hourly intervals from UTC, while they were based on the movement of the Sun in the sky compared with meridians 15° apart west Greenwich (GMT). This is after investigators found no evidence of an official map of the time zone boundaries.Ī report by the inspector general of the DOT explained that “The official boundaries are narratively described with various types of coordinates and geographic features such as lines of longitude, State or country lines, and rivers.” In September 2022, the DOT declared that a project of creating this map exists and that it will be published once completed. The boundaries of these time zones are regulated by the Department of Transportation, but there is still no clear map of it. Eastern, also called Zone R, includes the states on the Atlantic coast and the eastern part of the Ohio Valley.Central, Zone S, comprises the Gulf Coast, Mississippi Valley, and the majority of the Great Plains,.Mountain is Zone T, and it covers the states that include the Rocky Mountains and the western part of the Great Plains.Pacific, Zone U, comprises the stated on the Pacific coast, Nevada and Idaho.Hawaii, zone W includes Hawaii and the Aleutian Islands, and there is no daylight saving. The odd thing, however, is that even if the US has very distinct time zones, it still has no defined boundaries for them. However, considering the size of the country, the amount of time zones is quite normal. The majority of them follow daylight saving time (DST) for approximately half a year starting from the spring months. The US is divided into six standard time zones. That’s not to mention half-hour time zones, similar to the old Amsterdam time, which ruled that Amsterdam was 20 minutes ahead of London. Australia, on the other hand, has three time zones. However, not all countries follow the same conventions: China, for instance, operates in one single time zone (CST). That line determines the rest of the time zones around the world. Time was standardised and a prime meridian was chosen as Greenwich, London (hence Greenwich Mean Time), with eight countries aligning including, France, Spain, Algeria and Togo. In 1884, 26 countries met in Washington, DC, to attend the Meridian Conference. Clocks display time from various time zones at Warsaw Stock Exchange, Poland, part of Central European Time. Time zones are pretty simple, right? In the EU, there are three standardised time zones: Western European Time in Ireland and Portugal, Central European Time, covering the bulk of the mainland such as Germany and Poland, and Eastern European Time, which includes Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Cyprus. Generally speaking, you can serve sherry directly from the bottle without feeling embarrassed. This exercise is also a great way to experience how its flavours will open as it warms up. Once you serve it, you can then sample it until it has warmed up to what you feel is the best temperature. The best approach is to take it out of the refrigerator and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Of course, it can be difficult to serve sherry at the exact temperatures indicated above unless you have a thermometer and wine cooler. Conversely, its taste will likely be too strong, masked by alcohol bloom, and indistinguishable if too warm. In short, the flavours won’t express themselves if the sherry is served too cold. As a result, they will evaporate at different rates according to the temperature at which it is served. Sherry is composed of a plethora of rich volatile aroma compounds, which are captured within a relatively strong alcoholic base. Meanwhile, sweet sherry varieties are best served within the following temperatures: * Some may argue that Fino sherry can be served as much as 9☌ Nevertheless, serving it within a particular temperature range will only help improve the overall experience.ĭepending on its variety, the classic types of dry sherry are best served at the following temperatures: You are, of course, free to drink sherry however you enjoy it and don’t have to follow any rules. – Boas are docile, although some wild-caught specimens may be aggressive. Boa constrictors ( Boa constrictor) are widely kept snakes, with the Colombian boa being the most popular subspecies. You can also find scaleless corn snakes ranging from $100 to $1000. Their pricing may vary according to their color variation and where you buy them. With new corn snake variations becoming available every year, there is a wide range of color morphs, pattern morphs, compound morphs and hybrids available in the market. Normal corn snake hatchlings are typically priced within the $25 to $40 range. In captivity, corn snakes are fed frozen/thawed feeder mice. Corn snakes enjoy burrowing and hiding it’s best to include a loose substrate such as aspen shavings, along with at least a couple of hide boxes inside their enclosure. They are easy to take care of, with most adult specimens only needing a 20 to 25-gallon vivarium. Corn snakes tolerate being handled even for prolonged periods. In the wild, a corn snake may live around 6 to 8 years, but with proper care, a corn snake may live up to 23 years or longer in captivity. Corn snakes don’t need large enclosures and are very easy to breed. Most of them have vibrant orange or red backs with black and white patterning on their ventral region. They don’t grow too long, with most reaching 2 to 5 feet when they reach adulthood. They have a slender build and round pupils. Corn snakes ( Pantherophis guttatus) are among the most popular snakes due to their docile nature, and wide array of color morphs. But if you’re curious, the most expensive ball python morph, the Lavender Albino Ball python, is reported to be $40,000. Here is some information on the price of pastel ball pythons. Most morphs come within the price range of $40 to $200. If you’re looking for a morph, the price may vary according to the rarity of the breed. In most reptile shows and pet stores, the price for a normal ball python should start at around $30. Due to their placid nature, it’s important to keep at least two hide boxes inside a ball python’s enclosure. In the wild, ball pythons spend the majority of their time hiding in mammal burrows and other underground hiding places, where they’ll remain dormant for extended periods (aestivation). – They are terrestrial species known for their defense strategy where they coil into a tight ball with the head and neck tucked in the center when threatened. If your ball python looks healthy, this is not a cause for concern but if it starts looking skinny, see your herp vet immediately.According to a study published in the journal, Zoology, snakes can bring down their metabolism by up to 72%, allowing them to go on without eating for extended periods. A ball python’s fast may last for several weeks at a time. It is common for ball pythons to stop eating at any time of the year. Water bowls inside a ball python’s enclosure should be large enough to soak in and sturdy enough not to get easily tipped over. Due to their humidity requirements, it’s best to avoid using screen tops for their enclosure. – Ball pythons need some humidity in their enclosures, being native to western and central Africa. – With proper husbandry techniques, ball pythons are relatively easy to take care for. – They are long-living snakes, with some living up to 30 years in captivity. – They are good snakes for beginners because they aren’t heavy bodied like other snakes in the Pythonidae family, with females growing up to 3-5 feet in length and males, around 2 to 3 feet in length. The ball python ( Python regius) is the most popular snake due to its calm demeanor and the wide range of morphs available in the market.
